Mulch or catch lawn clippings?

Mulch or catch lawn clippings?

There is no clear cut answer that is true for every lawn, but here are some points to consider and help you to make this decision. Whilst mulching does feed organic matter back into your lawn, but it can have some drawbacks too.

I would generally cut a lawn and allow fine clippings back into the lawn if -

  • Clippings are not excessive - you don't want to get an accumulation building up below the lawn, and especially not on top of it.
  • You have a fairly weed free lawn - mulching can spread weed seed around more than catching.
  • Weather is not too rainy - you may well end up with clumps of clippings on your lawn
  • Colder weather regions - although cold weather does mean less grass clippings, it also means they will be slower to break down below the top layer of your lawn. Your lawn may cope with a small amount, but be careful not to overdo it.
  • How big is your lawn? From an effort and cost perspective, when considering larger property lawns, the mulching option is generally going to win when ever it is possible. As a business owner, mulching cut of lawns helps us keep our prices reasonable, but it does demand that the mower and blades are kept in good order to make sure the clippings are as fine as possible. Fine clippings will break down quicker than coarse ones, and do feed nutrient back into your lawn every time you mow.
